TikTok Data Usage: How Much Data Does TikTok Use?

Understanding TikTok's Data Consumption

TikTok, the popular short-form video sharing platform, can consume a significant amount of data, especially if used regularly. During our tests, TikTok used approximately 70MB of data across five minutes, amounting to around 840MB in an hour under default settings. However, using TikTok's Data Saver mode, we observed a significant reduction to 30MB in five minutes, or around 360MB per hour.

Data Usage Considerations

For heavy TikTok users, understanding the associated data usage is crucial. If you watch TikTok videos for one hour each day, you may consume approximately 1GB of data. This amount can quickly add up, especially if you frequently use the platform. To accommodate for TikTok's data-intensive nature, it's recommended to have a data plan with at least 30GB per month if you regularly access TikTok videos for multiple hours.

Speed Requirements for Optimal Performance

While data usage is an important consideration, it's equally important to ensure sufficient internet speed for optimal TikTok performance. TikTok recommends internet speeds ranging from 10Mbps to 100Mbps, particularly when using video-centric apps like TikTok, Snapchat, and Instagram. Stable and high-speed internet connectivity ensures smooth video playback, reduces buffering, and provides an overall enhanced TikTok experience.

Additional Insights

In addition to data usage and speed requirements, we provide additional insights for TikTok users:

  • On average, TikTok uses approximately 840MB or just under 1GB of data every hour in default data usage mode.
  • TikTok allows videos with a maximum file size of 256MB on both Apple and Android smartphones.
  • TikTok videos have a maximum length of 10 minutes.
